Offense Goes Cold Down Stretch As Alaska Anchorage Tops Men's Basketball, 66-65
11/23/2012 1:33:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Anchorage, AK—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team went on a 24-8 run to start the second half, opening up an 11-point lead over Alaska Anchorage, but the UCR offense went cold down the stretch and the Seawolves eked out a 66-65 victory at the 2012 CARRS/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout Friday afternoon (Box Score).
Both teams had their offenses working in the first half with the Highlanders connecting on 50.0 percent of their shots and UAA making 48.0 percent of theirs. Austin Quick led UCR with 11 points as he was perfect from the field (4 of 4) and from three-point range (2 of 2).
The Seawolves (5-1) had a five-point lead at the half, 37-32, thanks to a 9-3 advantage in made free throws, and a 22-4 advantage in bench scoring. Jalen Little led Alaska Anchorage at the break with 10 points off the bench.
The Highlanders scored the first six points of the second half while the Seawolves missed their first five shots from the field, and UC Riverside was off to the races. Six different Highlanders scored during the run led by Dayton Boddie's seven points and Chris Patton's six. When the dust settled, UC Riverside had a 56-45 lead with 8:56 remaining.
It was still a nine-point Highlanders lead with 7:39 to go, when a lid appeared on top of UC Riverside's basket. UCR missed 10 of 11 shots down the stretch and five of eight free throws, while the Seawolves outscored the Highlanders 15-5 to close out the game. Chris Harriel had a decent look at a three-pointer with two seconds remaining that would have won the game, but it came up just short, and UAA had the one-point victory in hand.
Patton led all scorers with 16 points in the loss while Harriel added 12 and Quick finished with 11. Little and Kyle Fossman paced the Seawolves with 14 points apiece while Teancum Stafford added 10.
The Highlanders will take on Texas State in the final game of the Shootout on Saturday, November 24 beginning at 1 pm PT.
