Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team finished up its 2012-13 preseason schedule Saturday evening with an 83-72 victory over visiting San Diego Christian. (Box Score)
Junior College transfer Chris Patton led four Highlanders in double figures with 23 points, and Josh Fox posted a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double in the win.
Neither team led by more than six points in the first half, and an old-fashioned three-point play by Kwaminique Brandon gave the Hawks a one-point lead heading into the break. Fox and Patton each scored nine points over the first 20 minutes of play and San Diego Christian's Derrick Thompson scored 11 points off the bench to lead the Hawks.
The teams traded baskets to start the second half, but Chris Harriel's follow-up dunk off of a missed layup put the Highlanders up 44-43, and gave them a lead they would never relinquish. UCR led by just three, 56-53, with 12:30 to go, but the Highlanders went on a 9-2 run over the next 2:20 to take their largest lead of the game at 65-55.
The Hawks never got closer than eight the rest of the way, as UC Riverside shot 60 percent from the field after the break and took 22 free throws to just eight for SDC over the final 20 minutes.
The Highlanders used their size advantage in the interior to outscore the Hawks 38-20 in the paint. They also took 43 free throws on the night compared to 15 for San Diego Christian.
UC Riverside opens the regular season on the road this week as the Highlanders travel to DePaul for a Friday, November 9 meeting with the Blue Demons. Tip is slated for 6 pm PT.
