Chicago, IL—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team opened its 2012-13 season Friday evening traveling to the Windy City to tangle with DePaul, but it was the Blue Demons who used a 12-0 run early in the second period to pick up a 91-59 win (Box Score).
The Highlanders hung tough with DePaul throughout most of the first 25 minutes of play, but with 15:58 to go in the game, and the Blue Demons leading 49-37, DePaul turned up the heat, scoring 12 straight points to take a commanding 24-point lead, 61-37. UC Riverside never got closer than 18 the rest of the way as DePaul improved to 79-11 all-time in home openers.
UCR led, 9-7, with 3:19 gone in the first thanks to a pair of buckets each by Robert Smith and Chris Patton, but the Blue Demons scored 10 of the next 11 to take a seven-point lead.
Josh Fox's lay up with 13:14 to go stopped the run and the teams traded baskets over the next several possessions until a series of UCR defensive stops helped the Highlanders cut the lead to three, 22-19. Cleveland Melvin's baseline lay up ended UCR's spurt, and ignited a 9-0 Blue Demons run that put the Highlanders down 12 with less than five minutes to go in the first.
Smiths free throw with 4:58 to go put UCR back in the scoring column, and Robert Harriel's steal and fast break layup cut the lead to single digits, but DePaul closed out the half on a 5-0 run to lead by 11, 39-28, at the break
Smith led the Highlanders heading into intermission with nine points, while Fox added seven, and Patton chipped in with six.
it was still a 12-point DePaul lead with 15:58 to go in the second, when the Blue Demons strung together their 12-0 run which effectively ended the ballgame. Five different players scored during the run led by Melvin's four points.
Fox led the Highlanders with 17 points on the night, and Austin Quick scored 11 after the break to finish with 15. The pair combined to go 10 of 17 from the floor. Brandon Young led the Blue Devils with 20, and Melvin chipped in with 16.
UC Riverside remains in Chicago this weekend for a Sunday afternoon meeting with the UIC Flames. Tip is slated for 11 am PT.
