Box Score - UC Riverside 4, Maine 3 (8 innings)
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team was down by two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when a two-out rally led to three runs as the Highlanders completed the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Maine on Friday afternoon.
The game went into extra innings tied at one, but Maine put a two-spot on the board to take a 3-1 advantage.
With Brittany Keeney at third base and two outs for the Highlanders in the bottom of the eighth, Kaylie Atkinson started the rally by belting a shot over the left field fence to tie the game at 3-3.
Alexis Pickett kept the inning alive as she reached on an error by Black Bear's pitcher Ashley Kelley. Pickett then stole second and advanced to third on a bad throw from Maine's catcher. Jordyn McDonald then laced a double to right center, scoring the game-winning RBI as Pickett came home.
McDonald also earned the win in the circle for UC Riverside, tossing three innings in relief and striking out five.
The Highlanders' bats were quiet early on, ammassing just one hit off of pitcher Ashley Kelley through four innings.
In the top half of the fourth, however, Maine's Hilary Kane hit a home run off UCR starter Taylor Alvarez for the first run of the game.
The Highlanders had a runner at third base with two outs in the fifth, but could not capitalize to tie the game.
In the sixth, the Bears chased Alvarez with a hit-by-pitch and walk to lead off. McDonald took her place in the circle, and promptly got the next three batters out.
In the bottom of that frame, the Highlanders scored the equalizer to make it 1-1. With two outs and a runner on first, Dionne Anderson singled up the middle. Atkinson then drew a walk to load the bases, and Pickett singled to left field, scoring Keeney from third.
McDonald allowed a single to start off the seventh, but recorded three consecutive strike outs to end the frame.
The Highlanders threatened in the bottom half of that inning, but the Black Bears turned a double play to send the game into extra innings.
UC Riverside now continues play at the Highlander Classic on Saturday, March 3 with a 11:30 am game against South Carolina at Amy S. Harrison Field.
