Stuart Throws Complete-Game Six-Hitter As Baseball Tops Fresno State 5-1
3/23/2012 9:12:00 PM | Baseball
Fresno, CA—Dylan Stuart threw a complete-game six-hitter, and the UC Riverside (7-9) offense banged out 13 hits in a 5-1 win over Fresno State (12-10) Friday evening in the first game of a three-game series.
Stuart (3-2) was dealing early facing the minimum nine batters and allowing just one baserunner over the first three innings.
By that time, the Highlanders offense had staked the sophomore left-hander to a 4-0 lead thanks to a four-run top of the third. Devyn Bolasky reached on a one-out single and advanced to second on a throwing error by second baseman Patrick Hutcheson on the same play.
One out later, Clayton Prestridge drew a walk, and Vince Gonzalez loaded the bases when he reached on an error by third baseman Justin Charles. Eddie Young beat out an infield single to short which scored Bolasky, and Cody Hough singled to center to put UC Riverside up 3-0. Jake Gallaway's single to right plated Young, but Hough was thrown out at third trying to take the extra base.
The Bulldogs opened the bottom of the third with a pair of singles, but Stuart retired the next three hitters to keep the shutout in tact. Fresno State put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but Stuart struck out Hutcheson to end the threat once again.
It was still a 4-0 UCR lead in the top of the eighth, when Young reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Gallaway's triple to left center put the Highlanders up by five.
The Bulldogs ended the shutout in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a lead-off double and a pair of ground outs, but Stuart retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth for his second complete-game victory of the season.
The Highlanders and Bulldogs play again on Saturday beginning at 6 pm PT.
