Gamecocks Too Much For UC Riverside Softball In 9-4 Loss

Box Score - South Carolina 9, UC Riverside 4
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team continued play at the Highlander Classic on Saturday afternoon with a 9-4 loss to South Carolina at Amy S. Harrison Field.
South Carolina scored two runs each in the first and second innings, and one run in the third opening a 5-0 lead. Meanwhile, Gamecocks pitcher Katelynn Howser had a perfect game going, retiring the first seven UCR batters in order.
However, the Highlanders finally got to Howser, as back-to-back singles in the third from Alexis Pickett and Halle Luna put runners in scoring position. Kayla White put UC Riverside on board as her sac fly to right scored Pickett, making it 5-1.
The Gamecocks continued their scoring, plating an additional two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.
It looked as the Highlanders were going to bow out in five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule, but UCR put together a rally in the fifth inning.
Luna singled to the shortstop, and White tripled to right center, scoring Luna. Relief pitcher Amy Lwin then stepped up the plate, and hit her first-ever home run over the right field fence to make it 9-4.
Lwin got out of a jam in the top of the sixth, but UCR stranded two runners in its respective half inning. In the seventh, Lwin again got out of a jam, but for the second straight inning, the Highlanders left two runners stranded as the Gamecocks held on for the 9-4 victory.
UC Riverside concludes play at the Highlander Classic on Sunday, March 4 with a 2:00 pm contest against Portland State at Amy S. Harrison Field.
