Alvarez Pitches Shutout For UCR Softball In 8-0 Win Over Vikings

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team concluded play at the Highlander Classic on Sunday with an 8-0 shutout victory over Portland State at Amy S. Harrison Field.
Taylor Alvarez earned the win in the circle for UCR, tossing five innings and allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out four.
The Highlanders scored single runs in both the first and second innings, but blew open the game with a four-spot in the fourth.
In the first, UCR scored its first run with two outs as Jordyn McDonald came home from second on a Jessica Vasser RBI single to right field.
An inning later, the Highlanders again scored with two outs as Ariel Shore was initially walked, then proceeded to steal second and third base before scoring on an error by the Vikings catcher.
In the fourth inning, Vasser started off the rally with a single to left field. She was replaced on the basepaths by Halle Luna, who stole second. Alexis Pickett laced a single to left field which advanced Luna to third, and Taylor Alvarez reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases.
Ariel Shore then came through with a two-RBI single up the middle as both Luna and Pickett touched home plate, putting UCR up 4-0. With two outs, Kayla White blasted a triple to right center, scoring both Alvarez and Shore to make it a 6-0 ballgame.
In the fifth, the Highlanders scored two additional runs as the game ended with the eight-run mercy rule.
Brittany Keeney led off the frame with a single, and moved to third after Pickett's single to center field. Pickett then stole second, and with two outs, Shore ran out a triple allowing both runners to score for the final 8-0 score.
Shore ended the day with two hits, two runs and four RBI. Vasser and Pickett also recorded two hits apiece for the Highlanders.
UC Riverside has just one day off before hosting a doubleheader against Saint Joseph's and Michigan State on Tuesday, March 6 beginning at noon at Amy S. Harrison Field.
