Los Angeles, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team traveled to Los Angeles Tuesday evening in search of its second win of the season against a top-25 opponent, but their bats fell silent, and the 16th-ranked UCLA Bruins won their seventh straight straight game with a 4-0 victory over the Highlanders.
Grant Wilson (3-0) got the start for the Bruins (9-3) and was nearly untouchable allowing just two hits and one walk through 5.1 innings of work. The Highlanders didn't pick up their first baserunner until the top of the third on a Jake Gallaway walk, and their first hit didn't come until Vince Gonzalez singled to left with one out in the top of the fourth.
The UCLA offense staked Wilson to a 3-0 lead thanks to back-to-back-to-back one-out singles in the bottom of the second, and a sac fly and an infield single in the bottom of the fifth.
WIlson was lifted in the top of the sixth after recording the first out of the inning, but his replacement, Shane Ziele issued a pair of walks to Phil Holinsworth and Clayton Prestridge before giving way to Chase Brewer. Brewer was greeted by a Gonzalez single through the right side loading the bases, but Eddie Young grounded into a double play to end the threat.
Highlanders starter Mitch Patito (1-1) threw the first four innings for UCR and although he struck out seven batters, he was touched for six hits and four walks.
Mark Garcia replaced Patito in the bottom of the fifth, and in the bottom of the sixth, he allowed the first three Bruins to reach base. Cody Keeler's bunt single scored Cody Regis with UCLA's fourth run of the evening, before Ben Doucette relieved Garcia with runners at first and second with two outs.
Doucette picked up the final out of the inning and didn't allow a hit the rest of the way pitching 2.1 innings while striking out two batters. But the Highlanders only recorded one hit combined in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
UC Riverside returns home this weekend for a three-game series with Sacramento State. First pitch Friday at the Riverside Sports Complex is 6 pm PT.
