Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Visiting CSU Bakersfield
4/14/2012 2:30:00 PM | Baseball
Riverside—UC Riverside pitchers gave up just two runs in 18 innings Saturday during their double header with CSU Bakersfield, but the Highlanders bats fell silent in game two, and they had to settle for a split taking game one 7-0 and falling in the night cap, 2-1. (Listen To Audio Highlights)
In game one, both starting pitchers were dealing early as UC Riverside's Dylan Stuart (4-3) retired the first eight batters he faced, and the Runners Jeff McKenzie (2-4) retired the first nine Highlanders to come to the plate.
Jordie Hine picked up the first CSUB base knock on an infield single up the middle with two gone in the top of the second, but Stuart caught him leaning and picked him off, 1-3-6. It would be three more innings before the Runners would get another base runner.
In the meantime, UC Riverside scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Eddie Young singled to center field scoring Kevin Davidson. Nick Vilter would score UCR's second run of the inning on a fielding error by center fielder Andrew Letourneau to put UCR up 2-0.
The Highlanders started the sixth inning with a bunt single by Vince Gonzalez as he slid head first to beat the throw. After Gonzalez advanced to second on a ground out by David Andriese, Clayton Prestridge hit a single down the left field line driving Gonzalez home to increase the lead to 3-0.
After a hit by Kevin Davidson, Cody Hough drew off a walk and Vilter grounded out to second base bringing Prestridge home and giving the Highlanders a four-run cushion.
CSUB put together their most significant threat in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. After a visit to the mound by UCR pitching coach Bobby Applegate, Stuart closed out the inning with a ground out by Kevin Younger.
The Highlanders scored three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game out of reach, and end Stuart's night. The left-hander pitched seven innings, allowing just four hits, striking out six and not walking a single batter.
Ben Doucette threw a scoreless eighth inning, and Gavin Mills was similarly effective in the ninth as the Highlanders recorded their third shutout of the season.
Kevin Davidson and Vince Gonzalez both had multi-hit games for UC Riverside going a combined five for eight with three runs scored and two RBIs
The Highlanders were looking for the sweep in the nightcap, however CSUB's starting pitcher Scott Brattvet proved to be too much pitching a complete-game seven-hitter, striking out 10 batters while logging nearly 150 pitches.
Eddie Orozco tried to match him pitch for pitch, striking out nine and allowing just seven hits, but one of those hits was a Dylan Christensen home run to lead off the top of the eighth that broke a 1-1 tie.
Orozco retired the Road Runners in order in the first, but he ran into trouble in the second as Kevin Younger doubled down the left field line with one out, and two batters later, Andrew Letourneu brought him home with a single to center.
The Highlanders wasted no time to get back in the ballgame as they tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third. After Young drew a walk with two outs, he advanced to second base on an error by CSUB pitcher Scott Brattvet as his pickoff attempt went wild. That error would come back to haunt Brattvet as Phil Holinsworth laced a single to left field driving Young home to tie the game.
The score remained tied until the top of the eighth inning when UCR's Orozco gave up Christensen's lead-off homer, just the second home run allowed by the senior all season.
The Highlanders got the tying run in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to produce the clutch hit to bring the run home in either inning.
The Highlanders and Runners finish their three-game series with a 1 pm start on Sunday, April 15.
