Offense Falters As UCR Baseball Drops 3-0 Decision to Loyola Marymount
5/22/2012 3:06:00 PM | Baseball
Los Angeles, CA—UC Riverside starter Mitch Patito enjoyed one of his most productive starts of the season Tuesday afternoon, but the Highlanders offense managed just three hits in a 3-0 shutout loss at Loyola Marymount.
For Patito (3-4), it was his first action against live ammunition since a May 9 start against these same Lions. LMU (25-26) got the better of him in that appearance as Patito gave up three hits and walked five in 3.1 innings of work and the Lions built an early 3-0 lead. UC Riverside (21-29) would eventually come back to win the game, 8-5.
It was a much different Patito on the mound Tuesday, as he held Loyola Marymount to just one hit through the first four innings. Unfortunately, Lions starter Sean Buckle also gave up just one hit through four innings of work and the game remained tied at zero.
The Lions broke into the scoring column one inning later as Joey Boney led off the bottom of the fifth with a double to left center. After Matt Lowenstein sacrificed Boney to third, Alex Guthrie brought hime homeward with an infield single to short. Colton Plaia then reached on an error by UCR third baseman Alex Rubanowitz, and Tanner Donnels drew a walk to load the bases. Patito got Shon Roe to pop out to short, however, and the inning was over.
Justin Grijalva (1-0), who replaced Buckle to start the fifth, kept the Highlanders in check giving up just one hit in his 2.2 innings of work. Aaron Griffin took over for Grijalva with a runner on and two outs in the top of the seventh striking out Phil Holinsworth to end the frame.
Patito struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh, but the next two hitters, Guthrie and Plaia launched home runs over the left field fence to put the Lions up 3-0.
That was all the offense either team could muster as Griffin retired the Highlanders in order in the eighth, and Bret Dahlson pitched a scoreless ninth for his 10th save of the season.
The Highlanders head to USC on Wednesday for their final road game of the season. First pitch is 6 pm PT.
