UC Riverside Baseball Erases Four-Run Deficit To Top USC, 14-9

Los Angeles, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team came back from an early four-run deficit Wednesday evening to outslug the USC Trojans in a 14-9 victory.
Donovan Gonzalez got his first-ever start for the Highlanders (22-29), and he struggled in the early going giving up a double, a single, and a walk before Dante Flores hit a grand slam over the right field wall to put the Trojans up 4-0.
He settled down after that, however, retiring USC (23-29) in order in the second and third inning, and the Highlanders tied the game at four thanks to a solo shot by Eddie Young in the top of the third, and a three-run top of the fourth which included a steal of home by David Andriese.
The Trojans regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by JR Aguirre, but it wouldn't last long as David Andriese drove in Vince Gonzalez with a two-out single in the top of the fifth, and the next batter, Kyle Boudreau brought a pair of Highlanders home with a double to right center.
UCR tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth as Clayton Prestridge delivered a bases loaded single to center that scored two, and Andriese singled to right to put the Highlanders up 10-5.
They weren't done, however, as the very next inning, three straight singles by Bart Steponovich, Young and Phil Holinsworth put UC Riverside up by six. Two batters later, a throwing error by USC shortstop James Roberts plated two more UCR runners to make it a 13-5 game
Mark Garcia (2-1) took over for Gonzalez to start the fifth, and threw two scoreless innings before running into trouble in the bottom of the seventh. The Trojans touched him for six hits and four runs in the frame cutting the Highlanders lead in half.
UC Riverside ended the scoring in the top of the ninth as Andriese's run-scoring single plated Holinsworth with the team's 14th run of the game.
Trevor Frank threw a scoreless eighth and Ben Doucette retired the Trojans in order in the ninth.
The Highlanders host Cal Poly this weekend for a three-game Big West Conference series that serves as the final games of the regular season for both squads. First pitch Friday is 6 pm PT.
