Stockton, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Teams heads out on the road for its next eight games beginning with a three-game series this weekend at Pacific. First pitch Friday is slated for 6 pm PT.
RHP Eddie Orozco (4-5, 2.63) gets the Friday start for the Highlanders for the second week in a row. The fifth-year senior is coming off of one of his more difficult outings of the season. He struck out 10 batters in five innings vs. Cal State Northridge on May 4, but he allowed seven hits, three walks and five runs over that span as well as the Highlanders dropped an 8-7 decision in extra innings.
RHP Trevor Frank (1-6, 3.80) will throw Saturday (6 pm) and LHP Dylan Stuart (5-6, 4.44) gets the call on Sunday (1 pm). Frank allowed just two earned runs in eight innings in his last appearance, but errors led to three unearned runs in a 7-3 loss to CSUN. Stuart threw eight innings of four-hit baseball his last time out in a 3-1 win over the Matadors on May 6.
Vince Gonzalez went three for five with two runs scored and two RBIs vs. Loyola Maryount on Wednesday evening running his hitting streak to 14 straight games. The last time a member of the Highlanders had a longer streak was in 2010 when Robert Brantley recorded a hit in 15 consecutive games.
The Tigers have struggled this season going 11-35 on the season, dropping 11 straight games including nine in a row in conference.
Pacific's offense has been decent this season posting an overall slash line of .269/.333/.355. Catcher Riley Drongesen leads the Tigers in all three categories with a .380 batting average, a .474 on base percentage and a .506 slugging percentage, but he has been out of action for the past few weeks. Conversely, there are seven Pacific batters hitting below .255 on the year.
The Tigers pitching has been its Achilles Heal in 2012 with an ERA of 5.84. RHP Michael Benson (2-7, 3.24) is expected to get the start on Friday, with RHP Michael Hager (3-5, 5.43) likely for Saturday. Sunday's pitcher is still to be determined.
