Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team scored eight unanswered runs Wednesday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex and held on for their second straight victory with an 8-5 win over visiting Loyola Marymount (Audio Highlights).
Mitch Patito got the start for the Highlanders (17-26) mowing down the first three Lions he faced, but in the second, he walked the first two batters bringing pitching coach Bobby Applegate out of the dugout. Shon Roe then sacrificed both baserunners up 90 feet, and Mitchell Esser drove them home with a double to left center.
Patito struck out the next hitter, Kyle Raubinger, but walked Scott Harkin, and gave up a single to Matt Lowenstein, scoring Harkin to put LMU (21-22) up 3-0.
The Highlanders got one back in the second, though, as DH Kevin Davidson pulled a Matt Florer (0-1) offering down the left field line and over the fence for his first career home run as a collegian.
UC Riverside put two more on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-out rally which Vince Gonzalez got started with a triple to right center. Clayton Prestridge brought him home with an infield single, and David Andriese tripled to center to tie the game at three.
Patito got caught in another jam in the top of the fourth as the Lions put runners on first and second courtesy of a double and a walk. That put the right hander to 75 pitches on the day, and he gave way to reliever Gavin Mills (1-0). Mills got Harkin to fly out to center and Lowenstein to pop up to short to retire the side.
The Highlanders took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, and once again, Gonzalez was in the middle of it. Nick Vilter led off the inning with a double down the left field line, and after Bart Steponovich drew a walk, Eddie Young reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to load the bases.
One batter later, Gonzalez singled up the middle scoring Steponovich and Young to make it a 5-3 ballgame. Prestridge was hit by a pitch loading the bases and a walk to David Andriese gave the Highlanders their sixth run of the game.
Reliever Brandon Horth started the inning for LMU and got into trouble immediately walking Eddie Young. Devyn Bolasky advanced Young to second with a sac bunt, but Young was thrown out at third trying to advance on a ball in the dirt.
Gonzalez tripled to right field, and Horth loaded the bases with an intentional walk and an unintentional hit batter. That ended his night as Ramiro Carreon entered the game. Davidson greeted Carreon with a single to right that scored a pair putting UC Riverside up 8-3.
The Lions ended their scoring drought in the top of the eighth thanks to an RBI double by Colton Plaia and an RBI groundout by Cullen Mahoney.
Ben Doucette recorded the final four outs of the game to record his third save of the season.
The Highlanders resume Big West Conference play this weekend as they head to Pacific for a three-game series with the Tigers. First pitch Friday is slated for 6 pm PT.
