Irvine, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team kept its record perfect Friday afternoon improving to 3-0 on the season following a 2-1 win over Detroit at the UCI Invitational. This marks the first time in the Division I history of the program that the Highlanders have been undefeated through three matches. (Box Score)
UCR jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 33:24 gone in the first as Aaron Long recorded his first goal of the season with assists credited to Humberto Santiago and Joseph O'Connor.
The Titans tied the match less than a minute later thanks to a goal by Pat Lepera. It was the first goal allowed by the Highlanders this season, ending a Division I-era program record of 290:08 consecutive scoreless minutes.
It looked like the teams were headed into overtime, but with 4:37 to go, Ivan Garcia rebounded a blocked shot and slotted it past keeper Nathan Steinwascher to give UCR the game-winner.
"It was a great win," said Head Coach Junior Gonzalez. "Our depth off the bench really gave us a spark in the second half, and the desire to outwork our opponent in addition to some better combination play was what created Ivan's game-winning goal."
The Highlanders return to Irvine on Sunday for a 2 pm PT kick off against Long Island.
