Box Score - UC Davis 3, UC Riverside 2
Davis, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team (5-11, 0-3) fought back from a two-set deficit Friday evening but could not complete its comeback falling 3-2 at UC Davis (8-7, 2-0) in Big West Conference action.
"I was excited by the effort and mindset change after game two," Head Coach Ron Larsen stated. "It would have been so easy to give up and lose 0-3. But rather than do that they played together and battled for every point. Amazing things can happen when you just go out and play hard. You seem to get luckier the more you compete."
Ashley Cox led all players with 24 kills while Amanda Vialpando added a double-double of 18 kills and 14 digs.
After falling behind 7-4 early in set one, the Highlanders rallied by scoring four of the next five points to tie the set at 8-8. Cox had two kills during that run while Vialpando added one.
The Aggies turned the tables at that point, scoring five consecutive to go back up 13-8. UCD pushed its lead out to 18-12, and the Highlanders never got closer than four the rest of the way as UC Davis won 25-18.
UC Riverside led early in set two, 4-2, but the Aggies outscored the Highlanders 10-2 to open up a 12-6 advantage. UCR cut the gap to four, but UC Davis scored four straight to push its lead back to 16-8. The lead stayed above seven points the remainder of the set as the Aggies took a 2-0 lead in the match with their 25-15 victory.
UC Riverside turned a 2-2 tie in the third set into a 5-2 advantage thanks to two additional kills from Cox, and one from Jasmin White. The Highlanders used their momentum to open a six-point lead, 12-6, and still led by that many at 19-13 before going on for the 25-17 win.
The Highlanders again led early in set four, opening a 10-6 margin, but the Aggies rallied off four straight points to tie the set at 10. The teams traded points with 10 ties scores until 21-21, when UCD scored two straight to go up 23-21.
Another Cox kill put UC Riverside within one, 23-22, and a block from Tyler Dorsey and White gave UCR the equalizer at 23. Emily Borges then put the Highlanders up at set-point, 24-23, with a service ace, and an attack error from the Aggies gave the Highlanders the 25-23 victory.
In the fifth and final set, the teams went back and forth to open the frame, with neither team leading by more than two points until UC Davis went up 12-9. The Highlanders closed to two, 12-10, but could not complete their comeback falling 15-11 for the 3-2 loss.
The Highlanders continue their road trip with a 7 pm PT match at Pacific on Saturday, September 29 in Stockton, CA.
