Volleyball Falls To Penn In Straight Sets To Conclude Molten Classic

Berkeley, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team closed out play at the Cal Molten Classic Presented by Hilton Garden Inn Saturday afternoon with a 25-17, 25-20 and 25-17 loss to Pennslyvania at Haas Pavilion. The Highlanders fall to 3-6 on the season while the Quakers move to 3-3.
Similar to UCR's first match of the day against Cal, the Highlanders hung touch against Penn with 17 ties scores and nine lead changes throughout the match.
In the first set, the teams traded points with 10 ties scores through 13-13. The Quakers then outscored UC Riverside 7-1 to open up a 20-14 advantage, and the Highlanders could not recover as Penn won 25-17.
UC Riverside turned a 7-6 deficit in set two into a 10-7 advantage thanks to kills from Annishia McKoy and Amanda Vialpando, and consecutive attack errors from the Quakers. Penn then rallied for seven straight points to push its lead to 13-10.
The Highlanders eventually closed the gap to one late in the set, 19-18, but could get no closer in the 25-20 loss.
In the final set, Penn led wire-to-wire after opening the frame on a 4-0 run. UC Riverside stayed between two and five points until late in the set when the Quakers closed out the match on an 8-3 run to win 25-17.
Vialpando and Ashley Cox both had six kills to lead UC Riverside while three other players recorded five kills apiece.
Next up for the Highlanders is four matches at the ASU Sheraton Invitational from September 14-15 in Tempe, AZ.
