Harriel's Three-Pointer Forces OT, But Men's Basketball Falls To Long Beach State 91-82
1/17/2013 10:18:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—Chris Harriel's three-pointer with nine seconds to go in regulation sent the game into overtime Saturday evening, but Long Beach State outscored UC Riverside 16-7 in the extra stanza to pick up the 91-82 victory (Box Score).
A pair of free throws by James Ennis with 14 seconds to go in the second half put the Beach (9-8, 5-1) up three, 75-72. The Highlanders (4-13, 1-4) were out of timeouts, and pushed the ball up the floor needing a three to tie. Harriel pulled up on the right wing from 24 feet and drained his fourth three-pointer of the evening to tie the score, and Long Beach State was unable to get off a shot as time expired.
Momentum is a fickle thing, however, and the 49ers scored the first 10 points in overtime to take a lead they would never relinquish. Five different players scored for Long Beach State in the extra period continuing what was a balanced offensive attack all evening.
Keala King paced the Beach with 18 points, joined in double figures by Ennis' 17, Tony Freeland's 15 and Mike Caffey's 13. Four other members of the team scored at least six points.
The Highlanders played Long Beach even the entire game as neither team led by more than six points throughout regulation. UCR's offense clicked for the second straight game shooting 51.9 percent from the field in the first half and 59.3 percent in the second. They also connected on a season-high 10 shots from long distance.
Unfortunately, the Highlanders were also turnover prone on the night with the 49ers converting 17 UCR miscues into 33 points. The Highlanders also made just eight of 15 free throws on the night.
Chris Patton scored a career-high 21 points on eight of 11 shooting from the field and added seven rebounds. Harriel finished with 15 points while Taylor Johns had one of his best offensive performances of the season with 14 points and six boards, and Austin Quick went four of six from three-point range for 12 points. He also added seven assists on the night.
The Highlanders jumped out to an early six points lead and still led by six with 10:03 to go in the first period, 19-13. The 49ers scored six straight to tie the game, and from that point on, neither team led by more than four the rest of the period. Tajai Johnson's jumper at the buzzer tied the game at 34 as the teams went into the locker room at half time.
The second half of play was even tighter as neither team led by more than four until a King jumper put Long Beach State up six with 1:18 to play. Patton's jumper cut the lead to four, and after King made one of two free throws Patton scored on a layup to make it a three-point game with 34 seconds left. A Harriel lay up with 21 seconds to go brought the Highlanders to within one, and Ennis made a pair of free throws to set up Harriel's game-tying shot to close out regulation.
The Highlanders remain at home this weekend as they host UC Irvine on Saturday beginning at 7 pm PT.
