Northridge, CA—The Big West Conference season is underway, and the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team heads to Cal State Northridge and Hawai'i this weekend for the Highlanders' first two road games of league play.
The Highlanders are coming off of a tough 58-48 loss to Cal Poly in the conference opener for both teams (box score/recap). UC Riverside had an 11-point lead early in the second half, but a cold spell on the offensive end of the floor allowed the Mustangs to pick up the win.
Chris squared still leads the Highlanders offense as junior Chris Harriel tops the roster at a 10.7 points per game clip while junior Chris Patton is scoring 10.2 per contest.
Cal State Northridge enters the week with a 9-4 record, but after starting the season 6-0, they have dropped four of their last seven including their conference opener at Hawai'i Saturday evening, 74-71 (box score).
The Matadors average the second most points in the league at 80.5 per game. Sophomore guard Stephan Hicks is third in the conference in scoring averaging 18.4 points per game while junior guard Josh Greene chips in with 13.0 and sophomore forward Stephen Maxwell adds 12.2. Hicks also ranks third in the Big West in rebounds per game with 8.5.
UC Riverside is 31-36 against CSUN in the 67-game history between the clubs. The Highlanders have won three of the last four meetings, however, including a 63-61 win at the Matadome on February 22, 2012 (box score/recap).
Hawai'i is 7-5 on the season following their Big West opening win over the Matadors. The Rainbow Warriors have a one-two scoring punch of Christian Standhardinger (15.7 ppg) and Vander Joaquim (15.3). Brandon Spearman also averages in double figures at 10.3 points per game. Hawai'i is turnover prone, however, as they average 15.9 miscues per game.
The Highlanders are 1-1 all-time against the Rainbow Warriors, winning the ESPN BracketBusters game between the squads, 79-62, on February 23, 2008 (box score) and dropping the return game, 56-46, on December 23, 2008 (box score/recap).
