Riverside—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team dropped its home opener to Cal State Northridge, 3-0, Friday evening in Big West Conference action. The Highlanders (1-13, 0-2) were more competitive in each subsequent set, falling 25-12, 25-15, and 25-19 to the Matadors (12-3, 2-0).
Cal State Northridge came out of the gate strong in the first set opening a 5-0 lead, and increasing it to 10-2. That prompted a Highlanders timeout, and the blue and gold responded by scoring five straight points to cut the margin to 10-7. Tyler Dorsey served during that run and recorded one service ace, while Ashley Cox contributed two kills, and Cristina Maietta had one.
A 4-0 rally by the Matadors cut UCR's momentum, however, as the lead went back to seven. The Highlanders got as close as six points but could not stop CSUN down the stretch as Northridge scored the final 10 of 13 points in the 25-12 victory.
In the second set, it was Cal State Northridge leading 9-4 early on. A Cox kill then made it a four-point game, but that was as close as UC Riverside would get as the Matadors took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-15 win.
The third set saw eight tie scores through the first nine points as neither team had the advantage. CSUN then turned a 9-9 tie into a 13-9 lead after scoring four consecutive points, and went on to outscore the Highlanders 10-5 opening up a 23-14 advantage.
UC Riverside rallied by scoring five of the next six points to hold off match-point from CSUN. Maietta recorded three of those points with a trio of kills, while the Matadors had two attack errors. Down by five, 24-19, UCR looked to keep its streak going but fell just short, as a Natalie Allen kill secured the 25-19 victory for Northridge.
Maietta led the Highlanders squad with 10 kills while Cox added eight. CSUN's Allen led all players with 13 kills.
UC Riverside continues Big West Conference play at home on Saturday, October 5 against UC Davis at 7 pm PT at the SRC Arena.
