Riverside—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team dropped a tough four-set match to UC Davis (9-7, 1-2) on Saturday evening by the scores of 25-21, 18-25, 25-14, and 26-24. Cristina Maietta recorded a career-high 22 kills for the Highlanders (1-14, 0-3) while Ashley Cox added 10.
Both teams hit above .300 in the first set with the Aggies outhitting the Highlanders, .387 to . 333. Maietta had six kills alone in that frame as the Highlanders took the early 3-1 lead. UC Davis would tie the score at four, but UC Riverside scored four of the next five points to take an 8-5 advantage.
UCR still led by three, 10-7, but UCD scored five consecutive and eight of the next nine points to open up a 15-11 lead. UC Riverside rebounded and closed to just one, 17-16, following a pair of kills by Annishia McKoy, and one from Maietta.
The Aggies then scored two straight to go back up by three, and later opened up a four-point margin, 23-19, late in the set. Tyler Dorsey's kill followed by an attack error by UCD closed the gap to two, 23-21. That prompted an Aggies timeout, and after the break, back-to-back kills from UC Davis secured the win, 25-21.
It was the Highlanders who outhit the Aggies in set two, .270 to .161. Maietta again recorded six kills in the set as UCR battled with seven tie scores and three lead changes to pull out the 25-18 win.
UC Riverside turned a 9-9 tie into a 14-10 advantage thanks to three UC Davis attack errors, a Maietta kill, and a Nae Bender service ace. The Highlanders then opened a five-point lead, 17-12, and pushed it to six, 20-14, following a service ace from Jessica Moncayo.
The teams traded points with UCR's lead never dipping below three as back-to-back kills from Maietta and Dorsey closed out the frame, 25-18, giving the Highlanders the 1-1 tie in the match.
UC Davis took a 2-1 lead in the match following a 25-14 third-set victory. The beginning of the set was very close with eight tie scores and three lead changes through the first 12 points. The Aggies, however, turned an 11-10 deficit into a 21-11 lead as the Highlanders were held scoreless for 11 points.
Consecutive kills by Maietta stopped the rally, but UCD went on for the 25-14 win.
The fourth set was the closest yet with 10 tie scores and six lead changes. Tied at 19-19 late in the frame, UC Davis scored three straight to take a 22-19 advantage, and led at match-point, 24-22, a few points later.
UC Riverside rallied and used consecutive kills from Maietta to tie the set at 24-24. Costly errors late in the set proved their downfall, however, as the Aggies closed it out thanks to a UCR service error and a block assist for the 26-24 win.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Saturday, October 12 match against Cal State Fullerton at the SRC Arena at 7 pm PT.
