Volleyball Falls In Straight Sets To UC Irvine, 25-19, 25-18, 25-10

Riverside—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team had hopes of picking up its first win in conference play Thursday evening, but UC Irvine took advantage of 14 Highlanders errors en route to a straight-set victory (Box Score).
Neither team led by more than two points in the first set until midway through the period when the Anteaters scored three straight to lead 14-11. UCR cut the lead to two on five occasions, the last of which came after an Irvine attack error which made it 19-17 'Eaters. But UCI scored six of the final eight points to take set number one, 25-19.
Ashley Cox recorded seven of UC Riverside's 15 kills in the period, but the Highlanders were plagued by eight errors compared to just two for UC Irvine.
The Highlanders jumped out on top in the second set leading 6-3Â following an Ashley McKoy kill, but Irvine scored six of the next seven points to move on top, 9-7. It was still a two point margin at 12-10, but the 'Eaters seven of the next nine to push their advantage to seven, 19-12. UC Riverside was never able to get closer than five the rest of the way, dropping the second set, 25-18.
The third set was all Irvine as they scored the first three points and never looked back on their way to a 25-10 victory.
Aly Squires and Cassidy Pickrell recorded 11 and 10 kills respectively to pace the Anteaters, while Cox led the Highlanders with a game-high 14.
UC Riverside remains at home Friday for a 7 pm PT match vs. Long Beach State.
