Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team, coming off of a 72-67 Homecoming win over Montana State, travels to Southern Utah (Saturday, November 23, 6:30 pm PT) and Seattle University (Monday, November 25, 7 pm) for a pair of non-conference games this week.
Sophomore Taylor Johns is the Highlanders' leading scorer on the young season averaging 19.3 points per game. It was his career-high 31 points that helped UC Riverside to its Homecoming victory over the Bobcats on Saturday night (box score/recap/audio highlights).
Johns is also pacing the squad in field goal percentage (65.7%) rebounding (6.0 per game) and blocked shots (2.00). He has scored in double figures in each of the Highlanders' first three games, after reaching that total just five times during his freshman campaign.
Southern Utah is 1-2 on the season after upending Arizona Christian, 85-78, to open the year and dropping road games to Utah State, 90-57, and Cal, 75-47.
AJ Hess and Trey Kennedy are each averaging double figures for Southern Utah at 10.3 and 10.0 points per game respectively. As a team, the Thunderbirds are making just 35.4 percent of their shots from the floor while the opposition has connected on 49.7 percent of its shots including 39.5 percent from long distance.
This is the ninth meeting overall between UC Riverside and the Thunderbirds (view all-time series). The Highlanders own a 6-2 advantage in the series, but Southern Utah won the most recent game between the programs, 76-65, on December 21, 2009 (box score/recap).
Seattle is 2-2 heading into the weekend with victories over Cal State Fullerton (75-71) and Evergreen State (100-59) and losses at Washington (88-78) and Boise State (86-68). Isiah Umipig, whom UC Riverside fans may remember from his two seasons at Cal State Fullerton, leads Seattle's offense averaging 18.8 points per game. The junior guard also leads the Redhawks in assists (5.5 per game).
The Redhawks are holding their opponents to 40.3 percent shooting from the field including 28.0 percent from beyond the arc. Seattle enters the weekend making 43.7 percent of its shots from the field anf 34.1 percent from three-point range.
This is just the second meeting ever between UCR and the Redhawks (view all-time series). The Highlanders picked up a 75-46 victory over Seattle on November 22, 1996.
