Riverside—Taylor Johns scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, but the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team came up just short Monday evening in a 73-69 loss to Loyola Marymount (box score).
Neither team shot well in the first half, but the Lions were able to turn a one-point lead into a 13-point advantage with a 14-2 run late in the period. LMU used the free throw line to its advantage making 15 of 20 prior to the break. Meanwhile, the Highlanders attempted just eight free throws making five. UC Riverside also committed nine turnovers in the half as Loyola Marymount took an eight-point lead into the locker room.
Evan Payne's nine points in the first led a balanced Lions' attack as five players scored five or more points during the first 20 minutes of play. Chris Patton's nine points paced UCR in the first, while Johns chipped in with six points and seven rebounds.
Chase Flint's lay up to start the second half moved the LMU lead back to ten, 41-31, but that's when Johns began to take control of the UCR offense. The sophomore forward scored seven of the Highlanders next nine points, and UC Riverside held the Lions scoreless for more than three minutes cutting the lead to one, 41-40.
A few possessions later, Chris Harriel drained a three-pointer to put the Highlanders back on top. That lead was short-lived, however, as the Lions began another parade to the free throw line. Loyola Marymount scored 11 straight points thanks to five shots from the charity stripe and a pair of three-pointers.
The Lions led by nine, 59-50, with 9:01 remaining, but Johns' jumper in the paint started the Highlanders on a 10-2 run. Johns converted on another jumper in the lane to cap the run and pull UC Riverside to within one, 61-60.
LMU wrested control of the game back from the Highlanders with a 10-2 run of their own, only to watch UC Riverside counter by scoring seven straight. That made it 71-69, Lions, with 44 seconds to go, but a dunk by Gabe Levin and a UCR turnover on the Highlanders' subsequent possession effectively ended the game.
Johns scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds over the final 20 minutes of play. Patton joined him in double digits scoring 15 on the night.
Anthony Ireland led the Lions with 16 points while Levin added a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double, and Payne scored 12 points. The statistical difference in the game came at the free throw line where LMU went 21 of 29, while UCR was nine for 14.
