Palm Springs, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team gets its 2013 season underway this week at Oregon State's Palm Springs Baseball Tournament. The Highlanders will face off against Gonzaga on Friday at 4 pm PT, Utah Valley on Saturday at 4:30 and the nationally-ranked Beavers on Sunday at 1 pm and Monday at 8:30 am.
The Highlanders were picked to finish seventh in the ten-team Big West Conference this season by the league's coaches in a preseason poll released by the conference last week.
UC Riverside is coming off of an eighth place finish a year ago with an overall record of 22-32 and a Big West mark of 9-15. The Highlanders return all but one position player from last year's team, and lost just one starting pitcher.
The Highlanders are 3-1 all-time against the 'Zags including a 4-0 victory the last time the teams squared off against one another on March 6, 2009 (box score/recap). Junior left-hander Dylan Stuart (7-7, 4.00 in 2012) gets the start Friday against Gonzaga.
UC Riverside and Utah Valley are squaring off against one another for the first time ever. Junior transfer Jacob Smigelski (RHP) gets the first start of his UCR career against the Wolverines.
Oregon State boasts an 11-8 advantage against the Highlanders including wins in each of the past four games. The teams last met on March 4, 2010 with the Beavers picking up a 10-3 victory (box score/recap) at the Coca-Cola Classic. Junior Ben Doucette (LHP, 1-1, 1.69) takes to the mound on Sunday, while senior Mitch Patito (3-4, 3.96) gets the call on Monday morning.
