Palm Springs—The UC Riverside Baseball Team opened the 2013 regular season at Oregon State's Palm Springs Baseball Tournament Friday evening dropping a 6-3 decision to Gonzaga (Box Score).
First pitch came two hours later than the listed 4 pm start time as the first two games of the tournament ran long. The delay didn't affect the 'Zags (1-1) offense as they jumped on Highlanders' starter Dylan Stuart (0-1) early.
After a lead off strikeout of Miitchell Gunsolus, Stuart allowed a single up the middle to Steven Halcomb, a double through the right side to Clayton Eslick that moved Halcomb to third, and back-to-back singles to Zach Abbruzza and Marco Gonzales that each scored a run. .
Gonzaga made it 3-0 in the top of the second plating an unearned run thanks to a fielding error by first baseman Clayton Prestridge. That miscue allowed Alex Bonczyk to reach base with one out, and after Gunsolus fouled out for the second out of the inning, Halcomb and Eslick laced back-to-back singles to center for the 'Zags third run of the day.
Stuart settled down in the third and fourth innings retiring the side in order, but in the fifth Gonzaga took advantage of another Highlanders error to go up 5-0. Gunsolus singled down the left field line to open the frame, and Halcomb reached after David Andriese dropped his fly ball to right. Eslick sacrificed both runners up 90 feet, and Abbruzza's doubled to left scored Gunsolus and Halcomb.
Meanwhile, UC Riverside put runners on base in the early innings, but struggled to bring them home. The Highlanders stranded two base runners in each of the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, UCR loaded the bases with two outs, but Joe Chavez struck out swinging to end the threat.
Donovan Gonzalez took over on the mound for the Highlanders with two outs in the top of the fifth, and kept Gonzage in check the rest of the way allowing just two hits in his 4.1 innings of work.
Tyler Olson (1-0) got the start for the 'Zags, and he scattered five hits in five scoreless innings striking out seven.
UC Riverside finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh as Chavez opened the inning with a triple down the left field line off of reliever David Bigeloe. Andriese brought him home with a sac fly to center to make it a 5-1 ballgame.
The Highlanders cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth loading the bases with nobody out before Prestridge singled through the left side to score UCR's second run of the game. After Eddie Young's infield fly to short, Chavez lifted a sac fly to right to make it a two run game.
Gonzaga scored its final run in the top of the ninth thanks to another UC Riverside error. Bonczyk singled to right to start the inning, and Gunsolus moved him to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Halcomb drew a walk, Nelson Benjamin lifted an infield fly to short for the second out of the inning.
The Zags started both runners on the next play, and Prestridge, who replaced Bart Steponovich behind the plate in the seventh, sailed his throw to third wide of the bag allowing Bonczyk to score.
Billy Moon came on in relief in the bottom of the ninth for Gonzaga, and struck out the side for his first save of the season.
Next up for the Highlanders at the Palm Springs Baseball Tournament is a Saturday tilt against Utah Valley. First pitch is slated for 4:30 pm PT.
