Long Beach, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team traveled to Long Beach State Saturday afternoon trying to hang the first home conference loss of the season on the 49ers. But it was the Beach holding the Highlanders to 23.9 shooting from the floor en route to a 75-35 victory.
The first time these two teams met, the Highlanders took the Beach to overtime before falling 91-82 (box score/recap).
It was a close game early as the teams were tied at 12 with 7:51 to go in the first. However, the 49ers scored the next eight points over a span of a minute and a half to go up eight, 20-12.
Chris Harriel ended the run with a layup, but Kris Gullet countered with a three-pointer to push the Long Beach State to nine, and Keala King scored on a fastbreak layup after a UCR turnover to make it a 25-14 game.
Davin Guinn's jumper reduced the lead back under double digits, and a Josh Fox free throw cut it to eight, 25-17, with 2:34 to go, but the Beach scored six of the final eight points of the period to take a 31-19 lead into the locker room.
The Highlanders struggled from the floor for the third straight half making 27.8 percent of their shots over the first 20 minutes of play. The game remained as close as it was thanks to an 8-3 UCR advantage in made free throws.
Long Beach State, meanwhile, made 52.2 percent of its first-half shots including 4 of 11 from long distance. James Ennis led all scorers at the break with 10 points.
UC Riverside's workhorse in the middle, Chris Patton was held scoreless in the first period, taking just two shots form the field. The Highlanders tried to get him on track immediately in the second, and he picked up his first points of the game on a jumper, but they were the last points he would score.
It was still a 12-point 49ers, 35-23, lead with 17 minutes to go, but the Beach scored 12 of the next 16 points to go by 20, 47-27. After a Taylor Johns free throw, Stephen Jones soared over a host of 49ers on a fastbreak dunk to cut the lead to 17.
While the dunk electrified the Highlanders fans in attendance, it appeared to awaken Long Beach State as the 49ers went on a 28-5 run to close the game
The Beach ended up shooting 52.9 percent for the game. Tony Freeland's 14 points paced the 49ers, while Ennis added 12 and Den Deng chipped in with 10 off the bench. Johns led UC Riverside with 10
The Highlanders return home this week for a Wednesday, February 20 meeting with the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT.
