Hot Shooting By Cal Poly Too Much To Overcome In 79-56 Loss For Women's Basketball

San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team had three players score in doubles figures Saturday afternoon, but hot shooting by Cal Poly was too much to overcome as the Mustangs earned a 79-56 victory in Big West Conference action.
The Mustangs (12-8, 6-3) hit 49.2 percent from the field, including 57.1 percent from three-point range. After a 28 percent shooting performance in the first half, the Highlanders (10-10, 3-6) upped their field goal percentage in the second half, hitting 47.1 percent for a total of 37.3.
Tre'Shonti Nottingham led the Highlanders with 18 points while Natasha Hadley and Brittany Crain each added 12. Ariana Elegado led three Mustangs in double-figures with 19 points.
After trading buckets to open the game, the Mustangs scored nine straight points, turning a 7-6 lead at the 17:19 mark into a 16-6 advantage three and a half minutes later. Hadley's layup at 12:47 stopped the run, but Cal Poly continued its offensive outburst, opening a 27-point lead, 45-18, at the half.
Elegado hit 4-of-6 from beyond the arc to lead Cal Poly with 12 points in the period.
The 18 points scored by UCR is the fewest in a half all season, and the fewest since they scored that same amount at Seattle on February 26, 2012. The 45 points scored by Cal Poly is the most an opponent has scored in the first half this year, and third-most in either half this season.
UCR opened the second half hitting 7-of-13 from the field, cutting the Cal Poly lead to 18, 53-35, capped off by a Nottingham three-pointer with 14:05 remaining.
The Mustangs responded with six straight points, pushing the lead back above 20 and extending it to as high as 32.
Cal Poly dominated in the paint, utilizing their 6-5 center to outscore the Highlanders 36-10 in the paint. The teams' were even on the boards, however, as each grabbed 38 rebounds.
The Highlanders remain on the road for a single game this week, a Saturday, February 9 contest at Cal State Fullerton. Tip is scheduled for 3 pm PT in Fullerton, CA.
