Men's Basketball Nearly Erases 18-Point Deficit Before Falling, 59-52, To UC Davis
2/28/2013 10:05:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team cut an 18-point, second-half UC Davis lead to six with 1:42 remaining Thursday evening, but the Aggies were able to hold on for the 59-52 Big West Conference victory (Box Score).
Pending the outcome of Hawai'is game against UC Santa Barbara, the win keeps the Aggies (13-14, 8-7) one game back of Cal Poly (9-6), UC Irvine (9-6) and the Rainbow Warriors (9-6) all of whom are tied for third place in the Big West.
The Highlanders led 9-8 with 14:34 to go in the first, but the Aggies scored the next eight points to take a seven point lead, 16-9 with 11:53 on the clock.
Davin Guinn's baseline jumper ended the run, and Austin Quick's floater in the lane made it a three-point game, 16-13. On the very next possession, however, Ryan Sypkens drained a three-pointer and UC Davis scored 19 of the next 23 points of the game.
It was a 14-point UCD advantage with 4:36 to go when Josh Fox came down awkwardly on his right leg as the Highlanders grabbed an errant Aggies shot. Time was called, and the Big West Freshman of the Year candidate limped to the sideline.
He returned to the game with 39 seconds to go in the first, but as the horn sounded to end the period with UC Davis up 37-22, Fox again came down awkwardly. The sports medicine staff helped him off the court, and he did not return to the game.
Sypkens led all scorers at the break with 14 points. He was joined in double figures by teammate J.T. Adenrele with 10. In contrast, the Highlanders used a balanced scoring attack with nine players scoring in the period, but Taylor Johns' four points was tops on the team.
A Paulo Mancasola three-pointer to start the second half gave UC Davis its largest lead of the game at 18, 40-22, but that's when the Highlanders clamped down on the defensive end. Sypkens and Adenrele, who combined for 24 points in the first 20 minutes of action didn't connect on their first field goal attempt of the second half until there were just over six minutes remaining in the game. As a team, the Aggies made just 36.8 percent of their shots in the second period.
UC Riverside slowly chipped away at the Davis lead, cutting it to 10 with 9:43 remaining, and an eight-point lead with 8:18 on the clock.
It was a 12-point lead with 6:01 to go, when the Highlanders put together one last run as Patton scored on back-to-back chances, and Johns made a lay up with 1:42 to go to make it 53-47 Aggies.
Sypkens led all scorers with 16 points while Adenrele chipped in with a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Tyler Les scored 10 points. Patton paced the Highlanders with a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double of his own, and Smith added 11.
The Highlanders remain at home this weekend for a Saturday, 5 pm PT Homecoming meeting with Pacific.
