The UC Riverside Men’s Basketball team closes out a three-game home stand this Saturday night as the Highlanders return to the SRC Arena to play Cal State Fullerton. The game will be televised locally on Fox Sports Prime Ticket as Paul Sunderland, Michael Cage and Kelli Tennant are on the call beginning at 8pm PT.
The Highlanders (5-17, 2-8) are also honoring former UCR standout Tim Oleno '65 at half time in the fourth of five “Bring Back the Past” events this season as the men's basketball program celebrates its storied history.
After shooting better than 50 percent from the floor in six of the team's last eight games, the UC Riverside offense hit a bit of a stumbling block last Saturday connecting on just 36.2 percent of its shots in a 69-53 loss to Cal State Northridge (box score/recap).
Junior Chris Patton continued his hot shooting, running his string of consecutive double-digit scoring performances to seven straight with an 11-point effort vs. the Matadors. He is now averaging 15.0 points in conference games, and connecting on 66.3 percent of his field goal attempts which leads the Big West.
Junior Chris Harriel led the Highlanders in scoring against Northridge with 16 points, and he is now averaging 11.0 points per game. Freshman Josh Fox led UC Riverside in rebounding for the ninth straight game, and his 6.7 rebounds per contest are tops among first-year players in the Big West and eighth overall. He is also averaging 10.2 points per game.
The Titans (11-11, 4-6) are coming off of a tough, two-point loss at home to Hawai'i that saw Fullerton give up a 12-point lead in front of the 4,205 fans gathered to celebrate Homecoming with their fellow Titans.
The loss was Fullerton’s third-straight, as well as their fifth loss in the last six games, and dropped the Titans into seventh place in the conference.
Cal State Fullerton ranks first in the Big West and third in the nation in scoring average (81.9) and free throw percentage (77.8).
The Titans also boast two of the top three individual scorers in the conference in D.J. Seeley (19.2) and Kwame Vaughn (18.3). In conference games only, the duo is averaging 20.8 and 18.7 points per game respectively, and Sammy Yeager is fifth in the Big West at 17.9 points per game.
Seeley is also tops in the conference in steals per game at 2.4, and Yeager is the third best three-point shooter connecting on 45.1 percent of his attempts from long range.
The Highlanders are 17-25 all-time against the Titans, and Cal State Fullerton has won the past three games in a row. The last UC Riverside victory came courtesy of a Kevin Bradshaw dunk (view the dunk) with 3.8 seconds on the clock giving the Highlanders a 70-69 road win over the Titans (View the all-time results).
