Eight-Run Sixth Powers Baseball Past Saint Mary's, 12-6

The Gaels scored single runs in each of the first four innings and another in the top of the sixth, touching UC Riverside starter Jacob Smigelski for nine hits in his 5.2 innings of work.
After putting 19 runs on the board Friday evening, the Highlanders offense managed just six hits and two runs in the first five innings against Saint Mary's.
Gary Cornish (1-1) replaced starter Ryan Brockett in the bottom of the fourth, and allowed just two hits in his first two trips to the mound. The bottom of the sixth was a different story, though, as UC Riverside sent 11 batters to the plate.
Pinch hitter Alex Rubanowitz drew a lead-off walk, and Saint Mary's shortstop Darian Ramage misplayed Drake Zarate's grounder to put runners at first and second. Joe Chavez laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases, and Eddie Young's single through the right side made it a two run Gaels' lead.
Kyle Boudreau was hit by a pitch forcing home another run, and Clayton Prestridge's sac fly tied the ball game. Ramage committed his second error of the game on the play which also allowed Young to score with the go-ahead run.
David Andriese put the Highlanders up two with a single through right side, and one batter later, Nick Vilter doubled to left to give UC Riverside a three-run cushion. Rubanowitz came to the plate for the second time in the inning, and capped off the UCR rally with a two-run home run to right field.
Mark Garcia (1-1), who replaced Smigelski in the sixth, took the Highlanders into the eighth allowing just two hits in 2.1 innings. In the bottom of the seventh, a Young triple to right center and a Boudreau single down the right field line gave the Highlanders a 12-5 lead.
The Gaels scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth, but that was all they could muster as Zach Varela came in in the ninth and faced the minimum three batters to close out the game.
UC Riverside and Saint Mary's finish their three-game series on Sunday, March 3 beginning at 1 pm PT.
