Baseball Opens Home Schedule With Three-Game Series Against St. Mary's

Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team begins the home portion of its 2013 schedule this weekend with a three-game series with the Saint Mary's Gaels. First pitch Friday at the Riverside Sports Complex is slated for 6 pm PT.

The Highlanders split a four-game series at Sacramento State last weekend and are now 3-5 on the year. Dylan Stuart picked up his first win of the young season with a complete-game, 2-1 victory in game one of the series lowering his ERA to 2.63 in the process (box score/recap).

Ben Doucette earned his first victory as a starter in UCR's 7-6 win in game two of Saturday's double header allowing just five hits in seven innings (box score/recap).

Clayton Prestridge leads the Highlanders with a .375 batting average, and he has hit successfully in eight straight games to open the 2013 season. Eddie Young's on base percentage of .524 is tops on the squad, and Kyle Boudreau is first on the team in slugging percentage (.750) after hitting a triple and a home run in Sunday's loss at Sacramento State.

Of concern for the Highlanders in the early going is the team's defense. UC Riverside has committed 23 errors in just eight games leading to 15 unearned runs.

Saint Mary's entered the week with three straight wins, all of which came over the weekend in a series sweep of Chicago State, but they dropped a 7-2 decision to Stanford on Tuesday to fall to 4-4 on the season. Big West foe Cal State Northridge took three of four from the Gaels to open the year.

No member of the team is hitting .300 or better so far this season. Anthony Villa paces the team with a .286 average, DonAndre Clark leads the squad with a .450 on base percentage, and Colin Ferguson's slugging percentage of .517 is tops on the Gaels.

The Gaels are set to go with LHP Jordan Mills (1-0, 2.77) on the mound on Friday, LHP Ryan Brockett (1-1, 3.46) on Saturday, and LHP Ben Griset (0-1, 7.71) on Sunday. The Highlanders will counter with Stuart (1-1, 2.63) on Friday, Jacob Smigelski (0-0, 5.06) on Saturday and Doucette (1-1, 10.57) on Sunday.

UC Riverside is 6-4 all-time against Saint Mary's (view all-time results). The teams split a four-game series in 2011 with the Highlanders winning the last meeting, 4-3, on March 20, 2011.
