Baseball Cruises In Home Opener With 19-5 Win Over Saint Mary's

The Highlanders (4-5) got on the board early loading the bases in the bottom of the first off of Saint Mary's starter Jordan Mills (1-1). Kyle Boudreau got things started reaching on an error by the second baseman, and a single to center by Clayton Prestridge put runners on the corners.
David Andriese was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and after Phil Holinsworth struck out, a wild pitch brought Boudreau home.
UC Riverside scored nine more runs in the bottom of the second taking advantage of a host of defensive miscues by the Gaels (4-5). Cody Hough opened the inning with a single to center, and after Bart Steponovich fouled out to first, Alex Rubanowitz singled to right advancing Hough 90 feet.
Joe Chavez then reached on a fielding error by the Gaels shortstop which brought Hough home with UCR's second run of the evening. Boudreau reached base for the second time in the game, this time on a bloop infield single to third, and Prestridge brought two more runners home with a single to left.
After David Andriese struck out swinging, Holinsworth ripped a triple to deep center scoring two more Highlanders for a 6-0 lead. Vilter singled up the middle to make it 7-0 UCR, and Hough tripled to bring home Vilter with the Highlanders eighth run of the night. An error and two wild pitches produced UC Riverside's ninth and 10th runs, and the game was effectively over.
The Highlanders tacked on four more in the third, one in the fourth, and four in the fifth to go up 19-0.
Meanwhile, Dylan Stuart (2-1) was scattering four hits through his first five innings of work en route to his second win of the season. The Gaels finally ended their scoring drought plating a pair of runs off of Stuart in the top of the sixth.
Kevin Sprague, Jack Johnson and Tyler Musgraves each threw an inning in relief to close out the win.
Game two of this three-game series between the Highlanders and Gaels is scheduled for 1 pm Saturday March 2.
