San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team doesn't have much time to enjoy its Big West Conference, season-opening sweep against #21 UC Irvine as the Highlanders play San Diego State in a pair of midweek games at SDSU on Monday and at The Plex on Tuesday. Both games are slated for a 6 pm PT first pitch.
David Andriese was honored by the conference as Big West Player of the Week for his efforts over the weekend. Andriese reached base all four times in UCR's 4-3 win over the Anteaters on Thursday (box score/recap/highlight video), drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh of a 7-5 victory on Friday (box score/recap/highlight video) and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth in Saturday's 3-2 win (box score/recap/highlight video).
Andriese now ranks in the top 10 in the conference in batting average (.375), on base percentage (.436) and slugging percentage (.525). The junior outfielder has improved his batting average by 102 points over his last nine games hitting .500 (18-36) over that span with five doubles, two triples and 10 RBIs.
Trevor Frank also had a great weekend recording a save in each of the Highlanders three wins over the weekend. On Thursday, he came into the game with two outs in the eighth, the Highlanders leading 4-3, and the tying run on first. Frank struck out Scott Gottschling for the final out of the inning, and pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the year.
On Friday, Frank started the ninth protecting a two-run lead striking out two of the three batters he faced and retiring the side in order for his fifth save of the season. On Saturday, Frank was charged with protecting a one-run lead, and struck out two Anteaters en route to his sixth save of the year.
The senior hasn't allowed an earned run since February 16—a span of 11 appearances and 18.2 innings.
Sophomore Antonio Gonzales will make the first start of his collegiate career for the Highlanders on Monday. The lefty has made four appearances out of the bullpen on the year posting an ERA of 7.88 over 8.0 innings. Tuesday's starter is TBD.
After opening the season with a three-game sweep of then #12 San Diego, the Aztecs have dropped 14 of their last 24. They have righted the ship of late, however, winning six of nine including a 13-7 win at New Mexico on Saturday. San Diego State also has a 12-2 win over Long Beach State on its resume in addition to a 4-2 loss at UC Irvine.
The Aztecs are hitting .249 as a team, and have just one starter hitting above .300 in catcher Jake Romanski. Second baseman Ryan Muno is hitting .412 on the season, but has not played since late February after breaking his hand in practice.
Eight different pitchers have at least one start to their credit this season for San Diego State. Ryan Doran (4-2, 3.32), Phillip Walby (1-2, 3.46) and Michael Cederoth (1-4, 3.56) have been the weekend starters for the Aztecs. It wasn't known at press time which of the team's other starters would take to the mound this week.
The Highlanders are 20-33-1 all-time against San Diego State. The teams split their two meetings a year ago with UC Riverside picking up a 7-1 victory at The Plex, and the Aztecs winning 7-3 at Tony Gwynn Stadium (View All-Time Results).
