San Diego, CA - The UC Riverside Baseball Team (13-10) had its four-game winning streak snapped Monday evening in a 10-2 loss at San Diego State in game one of back-to-back meetings between these clubs. (Box Score)
The Aztecs (14-14) hit UCR starter Antonio Gonzales for three runs in the first and one each in the second and third innings en route to 11 hits. The Highlanders scattered seven hits during the game but plated just two while committing three errors.
Consecutive hits to open the ballgame followed by a walk loaded the bases for Jake Romanski, who lifted a single up the middle to score two runners. A sac bunt by Tyler France advanced both runners into scoring position, and a wild pitch that got away from Gonzales scored the third Aztecs run of the frame.
An inning later, Steven Pallares singled to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a sac bunt before stealing third. He was then brought home on a sac fly from Greg Allen as the lead increased to 4-0.
The Highlanders got on board in the third as Joe Chavez rocked a 1-0 count and drilled a solo home run to centerfield, closing the gap to 4-1. But SDSU got that run back in its respective frame as another wild pitch brought a runner across making it 5-1.
In the fourth, Donovan Gonzales replaced A. Gonzales on the mound with runners at the corners, but did not fair better as Ryan Muno homered to left field to put San Diego State on top, 8-1.
In the seventh, the Aztecs added two insurance to increase its margin by nine runs. UC Riverside rallied in the ninth, though, as Francisco Tellez doubled to lead off the frame. After an out, Tellez advanced to third on a wild pitch, and came home on Alex Rubanowitz's single through the right side.
Unfortunately for the blue and gold, consecutive outs ended the rally as the Aztecs held on for the 10-2 win.
The Highlanders now host San Diego State on Tuesday, April 2 to complete the mid-week series. First pitch is slated for 6 pm PT at the Riverside Sports Complex in Riverside.
