Texas Tech Sweeps Volleyball In Season Opener

Ogden, Utah—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team opened the 2013 season Friday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to Texas Tech in game one of the Wildcat Invitational. The Highlanders (0-1) scored more points in each subsequent set as the match wore on, but the Red Raiders (1-1) outlasted UCR 25-11, 25-16, and 25-22.
Cristina Maietta led the Highlanders with eight kills while Tyler Dorsey added seven. The Red Raiders' Breeann David had 12 kills to lead all players.
In the first set, Texas Tech turned an early two-point lead into an 11-point lead thanks to a 10-1 run. The Red Raiders hit .364 during the set while UCR struggled hitting .000 in the defeat.
The Highlanders bounced back taking an early 4-2 lead in set two after kills from Maietta and Dorsey, and a Texas Tech error. But the Red Raiders scored the next six straight points to retake the advantage, 8-4.
UCR got within one point on six occasions, the last at 15-14 following another Dorsey kill. A late seven-point run by the Raiders proved fatal, however, as Texas Tech earned the 25-16 second-set victory.
UC Riverside trailed 15-9 in the middle of the third set before making a comeback by scoring six straight points. Two Maietta kills combined with three Texas Tech errors and one service ace from Dorsey quickly tied the set at 15 apiece.
Two more tie scores ensued as the Highlanders again found themselves knotted at 17-17. Texas Tech then made a run scoring two straight en route to eight of the final 13 points to earn the 25-22 victory.
UCR continues play at the Wildcat Invitational with a match against Weber State on Saturday at 10 am PT, followed by a noon contest against Seattle.
