Odgen, Utah -- The UC Riverside Volleyball Team continued its season-opening weekend of play at the Wildcat Invitational Saturday afternoon dropping a pair of matches to Weber State and Seattle. The Highlanders (0-3) hung close to the Wildcats by forcing a fifth set, but Weber State pulled through in the final frame to earn the 20-25, 25-19, 25-13, 26-28, and 15-11, five-set victory. In the second game, Seattle proved too tough as they defeated UCR in straight sets, 3-0.
Ashley Cox poured in 22 kills for the Highlanders against Weber State, and added another team-high 16 kills against Seattle. She was named to the Wildcat Invitational All-Tournament Team for her efforts during the weekend.
In game one against the Wildcats, UCR was up 20-19 late in the first set, and closed it out thanks to a Cox kill, two service aces, and a miscue by Weber State for the victory.
The Wildcats took sets two and three, 25-19 and 25-13, but the Highlanders rallied in the fourth set to tie the match at 2-2.
With 10 tie scores and four lead changes, it was anyone's game late in the match. Weber State took a three-point lead, 22-19, but UCR used kills by Tyler Dorsey and Bri Holmes combined with a Wildcats error to tie the set at 22. After trading points, UC Riverside took four set-point leads in the final moments at 24-23, 25-24, 26-25, and 27-26.
It took the Highlanders a bit longer, but they grinded out the two-point win, 28-26, punctuated by a Cox service ace to seal the deal.
In the fifth and final set, Weber State owned the early lead at 6-4, but UC Riverside scored three straight to go up 7-6. The Wildcats then made a run of their own, scoring four consecutive to retake the advantage, 10-7.
UCR got within two on three more occasions, the last coming at 12-10, but it was not quite enough as Weber State scored three of the final four points to secure the five-set victory.
In game two against Seattle, the Highlanders were knotted close in the first set with five ties scores through 10-10. Unfortunately, the Redhawks used a 5-0 run to kickstart a 15-3 rally that left UCR on the short end of a 25-13 decision.
The second set was even more of a see-saw battle with 13 ties scores and seven lead changes. The last tie score was at 18-18, but again Seattle got the advantage late scoring three straight and seven of the final 10 points in the 25-21 win.
The third set had just one tie score as the Redhawks kept the lead for the majority of the match. UCR fought back from an early four-point deficit to cut it to one, but never got closer as Seattle completed the sweep with a 25-17 victory.
Next up for UC Riverside is the Sheraton Airport Lobo Classic against New Mexico, Georgia State, and Idaho State on September 6-7 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
