Riverside—Sam Finley led four Highlanders in double figures with 19 points Thursday evening as the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team got back on the winning track with an 85-43 victory over visiting Waldorf College (Box Score).
The Warriors scored the first five points of the game, but the Highlanders outscored them 32-15 over the remainder of the half to take a 32-20 lead into intermission. UC Riverside controlled the game defensively allowing Waldorf to connect on just 23.5 percent of its shots from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play including 1 of 12 from three-point range.
Nick Gruninger, Lucas Devenny and Chris Harriel combined to go 10 for 11 in the first period for 25 points, but the rest of the squad struggled going two for 18.
All that changed after intermission as UCR made 60.6 percent of its shots in the second half. Finley went five for seven after the break scoring 11 of the team's first 21 points as they extended their lead to 53-29 with 12:01 remaining. UC Riverside's defensive was just as effective in the second, holding Waldorf to 32.0 percent shooting from the field, and turning 12 Waldorf miscues into 18 points. The Highlanders also made six of 11 from long distance in the final 20 minutes of play.
Finley's 19 points led all scorers on the night. Harriel added 16, while Quick chipped in with 13 (all in the second half) and Gruninger scored 12. Erik Brewer led the Warriors with 10 points.
The Highlanders head to the Lone Star State this weekend for a Saturday, January 4 meeting with North Texas. Tip is slated for 12 pm PT.
