Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team won the first two sets Thursday evening against Cal Poly, 25-19 and 25-20, but the Mustangs rallied back to win the next three, 25-19, 26-24, and 15-6, earning the 3-2 come-from-behind victory in Big West Conference action. Video Recap.
Three members of the Highlanders (2-19, 0-9) recorded double-digit kills led by 21 from Bri Holmes, 14 from Ashley Cox, and 13 by Alex Gresham. Holmes also recorded 10 digs for her first double-double of the season, while Amanda Press had 14 digs to lead the team.
Raeann Greisen had 16 kills to lead Cal Poly (8-11, 3-6), while two other players recorded double-digit kills.
The Highlanders were dominant in the first set, outhitting the Mustangs .297 to .156. Following five ties through 9-9, UCR used an 8-2 run to increase its margin to 17-11. Four different players recorded kills during the rally, while Maddie Hubbell added a service ace. Cal Poly cut the gap to four points on two occasions late in the set, but UC Riverside closed it out on a Gresham kill to seal the 25-19 win.
Cal Poly looked to be in control midway through the second set with a 14-7 advantage, but UCR rallied to eventually take a 21-19 lead. The Highlanders scored six straight points during that run, while Holmes added two kills and Press had two service aces. A service error by UC Riverside stopped the rally, but that didn't stop the momentum as the blue and gold closed out the set on a 4-0 run to go up 2-0 in the match with a 25-20 victory.
Tied at 14-14 midway through the third set, the Mustangs scored five of the next six points to go up 19-15. The Highlanders scored three of the next four to cut the margin to 20-18, but a 5-1 run by Cal Poly gave them the 25-19 win.
UC Riverside led early in the fourth set, but it was Cal Poly with the lead late, up at set-point 24-21. UC Riverside kept pushing, and used two Mustangs errors combined with a Sarah Bruchet service ace to tie the set at 24. A kill from Hannah Schleis made it 25-24 Poly, however, and a solo block from Greisen lifted the Mustangs to a 26-24 victory, tying the match at 2-2.
Cal Poly opened the fifth set with four straight points, but the Highlanders closed the gap to two, 5-3, capped off by a double block. The teams then traded points until the Mustangs turned a 9-6 lead into a 15-6 win, scoring six straight at the end to complete the come-from-behind victory.
UC Riverside remains at home to play UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, November 1 at 7 pm PT at the SRC Arena.
