Men's Basketball Hosts Sac State, Saint Katherine, Travels To Utah This Week

Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team will try do something Monday that the program hasn't done since the 1998-99 campaign—start a season with wins in its first two games. In order to accomplish it, the Highlanders will need to beat Sacramento State whom they host at the SRC Arena this evening beginning at 7 pm PT.
UCR won its season-opener for just the second time since making the transition to Division I on Saturday with a 75-52 Homecoming victory over UC San Diego (box score/recap). Big West Player of the Year candidate Taylor Johns led three members of the Highlanders in double figures with 18 while junior transfer Jaylen Bland scored 17 in his UCR debut, and Nick Grunger added 15.
Sacramento State tipped off its 2014-15 season on the road at #13 Gonzaga, falling to the Bulldogs 104-58 (box score/recap). Guard Dylan Garrity scored 13 points to lead the Hornets, while guard Cody Demps added 10. Sac State's starting post players weren't so fortunate as they scored 12 points while shooting a combined 5 for 19 from the field. The 'Zags connected on 54.5 percent of their field goal attempts against the Hornets, including 41.7 percent from three-point range.
The Highlanders are 12-5 all-time against Sacramento State (view results), but the Hornets edged UCR 69-67 in Sacramento last season (box score/recap).
On Friday, November 21, the Highlanders will travel to Utah to take on the #25 Utes for the first time in program history. Utah opened its 2014-15 season with a 90-72 home win against Ball State. They take on #16 San Diego State on Tuesday, November 18 beginning at 1 pm PT.
On Sunday, November 23, UC Riverside will square off against Saint Katherine for the first time in program history. The Fighting Firebirds take on Chaminade on Monday, November 17, University of Mary on Friday, November 21 and Chapman University on Saturday, November 22.
