11/29/2014 3:37:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—Alex Larsson scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Taylor Johns added 13 points and 14 boards Saturday afternoon as the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team picked up a 76-56 victory over visiting Abilene Christian.
Steven Thornton provided the first points of the game on a three-pointer with 1:16 gone in the first, and the Highlanders never trailed running out to a 9-0 lead before the first media time out. With 10 minutes to go before intermission Larsson's lay up put UC Riverside up by 18, 28-10, and the Highlanders took a 19-point lead into the locker room.
UCR held the Wildcats to 24.0 percent shooting from the field over the first 20 minutes of play. LaDarrien Williams led ACU with 13 points on four of seven shooting, while his teammates combined to go just two for 18.
John nearly recorded his double-double in the first half with nine points and eight rebounds, while Larsson chipped in with six points and nine boards.
Abilene Christian's leading scorer entering the game, Parker Wentz, was held scoreless in the first, but in the second he made five of six shots from the floor including two of three form long distance to finish with 14 points. That helped the Wildcats slice the UC Riverside advantage to 17 on several occasions, but they never got any closer.
The Highlanders travel to Bakersfield Tuesday, December 2 for a 7 pm PT tip against the Road Runners.
