Third-Set Rally Not Enough To Extend Match As Volleyball Falls 3-0 To UC Davis
11/8/2014 7:31:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team concluded its three-match home stand Saturday evening with a 3-0 loss to UC Davis by the scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-22.
Ashley Cox led the Highlanders with 11 kills while Alex Gresham added eight and Cristina Maietta had seven. Kaylin Squyres had 14 kills to lead the Aggies.
The Highlanders found themselves in a 14-6 hole early in the first set before rallying for seven of the next nine points. Maietta had three kills during the run while Gresham added two as the gap was cut to 16-14. The Aggies then scored two straight and nine of the final 11 points to earn the 25-16 win.
In the second set, the teams traded points early with tie scores at 3-3 and 5-5. The teams continued to trade points as the lead remained between one and three until UCD went up by five, 14-9. From there, UC Riverside cut it back down to three, 14-11, but allowed three straight from the Aggies as margin grew to 17-11.
A kill by Gresham cut the gap to five points, but that was as close as the Highlanders would come as UC Davis held on for the 25-16 win.
There were 11 ties and seven lead changes in the third set as UC Riverside looked to extend the match. The blue and gold led 12-10 midway through before the Aggies tied it at 12, and proceeded to tie it three more times through 15-15. UC Davis then went up 23-17 before the Highlanders stormed back to within one, 23-22, capped off by back-to-back blocks.
That forced an Aggies timeout, and whatever adjustments were made seemed to do the trick as consecutive kills by Squyres sealed the 25-22 win for UC Davis.
The Highlanders now hit the road for a pair of matches starting on Thursday, November 13 at UC Irvine.
