At the moment, UC Riverside owns the tiebreaker against UC Davis having beaten the Aggies, 81-69, at The Pavilion on January 16 (box score/recap). A win over Davis on March 6 would guarantee the Highlanders the tiebreaker, but if UC Riverside loses that game, the scenarios become more complicated.
The next tie-breaker is "record in conference games against common opponents beginning at the top of the standings and working down the standings until the tie is broken." The Highlanders and Aggies both have wins against Cal Poly (tied for 5th), but UC Davis also beat Cal State Northridge (tied for 5th). Both teams also have wins over Cal State Fullerton (7th).
Before the Highlanders and Aggies can do battle again, UC Riverside must first contend with Cal State Northridge. UCR dropped a tough 93-89 overtime decision to the Matadors on January 30 (box score/recap). Sam Finley scored a career-high 27 points in the game, while Taylor Johns, Chris Patton and Steven Jones added 16, 14 and 13 respectively.
CSUN has its sites set on an upper-division conference finish and travels to Cal State Fullerton on Thursday before heading to the Inland Empire. The Matadors have won three of their last four Big West contests including an 81-75 win over UC Irvine on Saturday.
Northridge boasts a trio of top-ten scorers in Stephen Maxwell (17.6 ppg), Stephan Hicks (16.6) and Josh Greene (15.3). They combined to score 59 points in the win over UC Riverside earlier in the season.
The Highlanders are 32-38 all-time against the Matadors (view all-time results). Cal State Northridge has won each of the last two meetings. Prior to that, UC Riverside won four of five games against CSUN.
