3/1/2014 11:12:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team outlasted Cal State Northridge in a thrilling, double-overtime affair Saturday evening pulling into a tie with UC Davis for eighth place in the Big West Conference with a 106-105 victory (Box Score/Listen To Highlights).
The see-saw battle featured 24 ties and 29 lead changes, the last of which came with 36 seconds remaining in the second bonus period. Sam Finley drew a foul, making both free throws, to put the Highlanders on top 104-103. After Josh Greene missed a jumper with 20 seconds on the clock, Stephan Hicks fouled Austin Quick battling for the rebound, and Quick's pair of freebies put the Highlanders up three with 18 seconds remaining.
Greene missed a three pointer on the Matadors next possession, but Aaron Parks grabbed the rebound and scored on a layup, and was fouled by Chris Patton in the process. He missed the subsequent free throw, however and Taylor Johns came down with the rebound to secure the win.
Cal State Northridge had a chance to win the game in regulation when Stephen Maxwell was fouled by Patton with three seconds to go, and the Matadors trailing by one, but he missed the second of two free throws to send the game into overtime tied at 83.
UC Riverside almost won the game at the end of the first overtime, but Hicks drained a three-pointer with a second remaining to tie the score at 97.
Patton led all scorers with 30 points making 13 of 19 shots from the field. Sam Finley added 20, while Quick scored 17, Thornton chipped in with 16 and Johns recorded a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double. Patton also had a double-double with 11 rebounds on the night.
The Matadors had three players top 20 points as Greene scored 26, Maxwell had 25 to go along with 12 boards and Hicks scored 24.
Both teams were lights out from the free throw line with the Highlanders making 34 of 39 and CSUN connecting on 31 of 36. Those 34 makes are tied for the 10th most in UC Riverside history and are tied for the most in the Division I history of the program.
The Highlanders and UC Davis are now both 4-10 in the Big West, but UC Riverside owns the tiebreaker at the moment having beaten the Aggies on the road back in January. Davis travels to the Inland Empire this Thursday, March 6 for a 7 pm PT tip off. If the Highlanders win that game, they clinch a spot in the conference tournament scheduled for March 13-15 at Honda Center in Anaheim.
