Riverside—Let the Madness Begin!
The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team led wire-to-wire Thursday evening clinching a spot in the Big West Conference Tournament with a 78-65 victory over visiting UC Davis (box score).
The win moves the Highlanders (5-10) a game ahead of the Aggies (4-11) with one game to play, but UC Riverside beat UC Davis twice this season giving them the tiebreaker and the eight seed at Honda Center in Anaheim next week.
Chris Patton scored on the Highlanders first two possessions of the game, and finished with a game-high 20 points, just missing out on a double-double with nine rebounds. He was seven of 10 from the floor with 14 points in the first half as UC Riverside shot 64.0 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes to take a 10-point lead, 39-29. Sam Finley added 10 points before the break, while the Highlanders defense limited the Aggies to 39.3 percent shooting.
UC Davis scored the first basket after intermission, and made 50 percent of its shots in the second half, but never got closer than eight the rest of the way. A 19-9 run midway through the second ballooned the UC Riverside lead to a game-high 18, 61-43. The Highlanders made their free throws down the stretch, going 16 for 18 on the evening.
Finley finished with 19 points, and Steven Thornton added 14, 11 of which came after the break.
Brynton Lemar led the Aggies with 19 points. Cory Hawkins added 19 and Ryan Sypkens added 10.
