Riverside—On Thursday evening, the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team punched its ticket to the Big West Conference Touranment at Honda Center, in Anaheim with a 78-65 victory over UC Davis (box score/recap). That clinched the eight seed in the tourney for the Highlanders, regardless of the outcome of tuday's game at Long Beach State, and all that remains now is to determine who UCR's opponent will be.
UC Irvine (12-3) and UC Santa Barbara (11-4) both still have a claim to the number one seed. The Anteaters host UC Davis today, while the Gauchos are at Cal Poly. UCSB has the tiebreaker over UC Irvine should the teams end the season with identical 12-4 records.
The Highlanders lost twice this season to both squads, 72-52 and 70-52 to the 'Eaters and 68-65 (OT) and 55-54 to Santa Barbara.
Long Beach State, at 9-6, has the three seed sewn up as they can't catch the Gauchos, and they own the teibreaker over Hawai'i who is currently in fourth place with an 8-7 mark.
UC Riverside is just 10-31 all-time against the Beach having dropped nine straight (view all-time results). The last Highlanders win over Long Beach State came in a 69-67 decision on January 2, 2010. The last UCR win at The Pyramid came on January 24, 2009 (64-55).
