Jake Smigelski Throws Five-Hitter, But Baseball Falls, 2-1, To Stony Brook
3/14/2014 9:31:00 PM | Baseball
Riverside—Highlanders starter Jake Smigelski threw a complete-game, five-hitter Friday evening at The Plex, but the UC Riverside Baseball Team fell to Stony Brook, 2-1 (box score).
Smigelski (3-2) entered the game with a 1.01 ERA, and he held the Seawolves in check for most of the evening allowing just seven base runners. Unfortunately, the first Stony Brook batter to reach base was clean up hitter Kevin Krause, and he crushed a home run over the netting left field to lead off the top of the second.
Casey Baker then drew a base on balls, and Robert Chavarria ripped a 1-2 offering up the middle. The ball caromed off of Smigelski's foot towards second base, but Nick Vilter had vacate the spot to cover second, and was unable to recover in time to make the play. Baker advanced to third on the play, and after Chavarria was caught stealing, Toby Handley grounded out to first scoring Baker with the Seawolves second run of the day.
Brandon McNitt (2-1) matched Smigelski pitch for pitch scattering five hits and one walk over seven innings. Two of those base hits came in the bottom of the third as Francisco Tellez and Devyn Bolasky connected on back-to-back doubles to cut the Seawolves lead in half.
UC Riverside put runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth, but were unable to produce the equalizer.
McNitt gave way to Chad Lee in the eighth, and the Highlanders once again put runners in scoring position, but failed to bring them home.
Cameron Stone came on in the ninth retiring the side in order to pick up his first save of the season.
The Highlanders and Seawolves continue their three-game series Saturday with a 6 pm PT first pitch at The Plex.
