Baseball Hosts San Diego Tuesday, Travels To Irvine For Three-Game Series This Weekend

Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team finishes its 10-game home stand on Tuesday, March 25 with a 6 pm PT first pitch against the San Diego Toreros. Then the Highlanders travel to UC Irvine for their first Big West Conference series of the year.
UC Riverside (11-9) took the last week off for finals, but before the break, they won three of four games to move two games over .500. Francisco Tellez earned Big West Player of the Week honors during that stretch after hitting .714 with a .789 on base percentage and a slugging percentage of .929 (read the release). He leads the Highlanders with a .424 batting average, while teammate Nick Vilter paces the team in on base percentage (.511) and slugging percentage (.824).
San Diego (15-8) snapped a four-game losing streak Sunday with an 8-1 win over Loyola Marymount. The Toreros are hitting .330 as a team with a .419 on base percentage and a .470 slugging percentage. They have pounded out 45 doubles and 20 home runs as a team. The San Diego pitching staff boasts an earned run average of 3.16 with 180 strikeouts in 208.0 innings.
UC Riverside will throw left-hander Antonio Gonzales (0-1, 7.50) Tuesday evening. San Diego will counter with Anthony McIver (0-0, 0.00).
The Highlanders are 39-36-1 all-time against the Toreros (view all-time results). The teams split their two meetings a year ago with San Diego taking a 3-2, 11-inning win at home on April 23 (box score/recap) and UC Riverside outlasting the Toreros 12-11 in 10 innings at The Plex on May 14, 2013 (box score/recap).
UC Irvine is 15-8 entering the week after taking two of three from Grand Canyon over the weekend. They are at Bakersfield on Tuesday before welcoming the Highlanders to Anteaters Ballpark.
The 'Eaters offensive slash line is .263/.350/.347. The pitching staff has an ERA of 2.73 and has walked just 49 batters in 211.0 innings of work.
The Highlanders will throw right-handers Jake Smigelski (3-2, 1.26) and Zach Varela (3-0, 2.75) on Friday and Saturday respectively, and lefty Ben Doucette (1-2, 4.79) on Sunday.
UC Riverside is 26-29 all-time against Irvine after sweeping the Anteaters in a three-game series a year ago when Irvine was ranked number 21 in the nation (view all-time results).
