UC Riverside Baseball Bangs Out 11 Hits, But Falls 7-4 At #12 Oregon

Eugene, OR—The UC Riverside Baseball Team banged out 11 hits Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as the Highlanders fell 7-4 at 12th-ranked Oregon (Box Score).
UCR fell behind early as the Ducks touched Zach Varela (4-2) for five hits and five runs in the first two innings. Only two of those runs were earned, however, as the Highlanders committed two errors in the second.
UC Riverside scored a run in the top of the second as David Andriese and Matt Ellis connected on back-to-back doubles, and another run in the top of the fifth on a Joe Chavez sac fly with the bases loaded. A Devyn Bolasky singled loaded the bases again, but the Highlanders stranded all three runners, and still trailed 5-2.
UCR cut the Ducks lead to one in the top of the seventh. Drake Zarate reached on a one-out double to left, and Cody Hough singled to center scoring Zarate. Hough advanced to second on the throw home, and that ended Oregon starter Jeff Gold's (8-0) night as Darrell Hunter came on in relief. A Chavez ground out moved Hough to third, and Oregon went to the bullpen again bringing in Garrett Cleavinger. Bolasky then beat out an infield single scoring Hough to make it 5-4, but that's as close as the Highlanders could get.
Dylan Stuart took over for Varela to start the third and pitched five innings keeping the Ducks off the board until the bottom of the seventh. A single and an RBI double put Oregon back up by two, and the Ducks scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.
Jake Reed pitched a scoreless ninth for Oregon to pick up his eighth save of the season.
The Highlanders and Ducks finish their three-game series on Sunday, April 13. First pitch is slated for 12 noon PT.
