Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team remains on the road this weekend as the Highlanders travel to nationally-ranked Oregon for a three-game, non-conference series against the Ducks. Oregon is ranked as high as 12th in the nation, and enters the weekend with a 24-10 record.
The Highlanders have dropped their last two games—7-1 to Cal State Northridge on Sunday (box score/recap) and 4-3 at San Diego State on Tuesday (box score/recap) to fall to 14-14 on the year.
Francisco Tellez (.386/.466/.509) is still flirting with .400 while Nick Vilter (.366/.496/.699) continues to chase the Highlanders single-season on base percentage and slugging percentage records. Junior transfer Thomas Walker has also recently emerged as a consistent offensive weapon for UC Riverside. He is hitting .333 overall, but over his last 10 games, he is swinging the bat at a .411 clip.
UCR's weekend pitching rotation remains unchanged with Jake Smigelski (4-3, 2.54) going on Friday, Zach Varela (4-1, 2.68) on Saturday and Ben Doucette (2-3, 4.35) on Sunday.
The Ducks primary strength is their pitching staff which is holding the opposition to a .211 batting average on its way to a 2.95 ERA. They have 280 strikeouts on the season in 305.0 innings of work. Oregon will throw lefty Tommy Thorpe (4-3, 2.90) on Friday, and right-handers Jeff Gold (7-0, 2.17) and Trent Paddon (0-2, 2.78) on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Offensively, the Ducks have a slash line of .276/.371/.385, and are led by infielder Mitchell Tolman. The sophomore paces the squad in batting average (.331), on base percentage (.445) and slugging percentage (.492) among regulars.
The Highlanders and Ducks split their two previous meetings, but haven't played one another since March 29, 1979 (view all-time results).
