Eugene, OR - The UC Riverside Baseball Team (14-15) opened its three-game non-conference series against No. 12 Oregon Friday evening with a 7-2 loss.
It was a pitcher's duel early as the teams' combined for one baserunner through two innings.
In the third, however, the Ducks (25-10) broke through putting a four-spot on the board against UCR pitcher Jacob Smigelski. Smigelski struck out the first batter of the inning, but proceeded to hit the next two putting runners on first and second.
After striking out the next batter, he walked A.J. Balter to load the bases, and Tyler Baumgartner then doubled to left center to drive in all three runners. Another hit-by-pitch put Mitchell Tolman on base, and Kyle Garlick reached on a Highlanders error, scoring Baumgartner for the fourth run of the inning.
Meanwhile, Oregon pitcher Tommy Thorpe kept UC Riverside's bats at bay, allowing only one hit through four innings.
The Highlanders finally dented the scoring column in the fifth. David Andriese reached an error by the Ducks first baseman, and moved to second after a Thomas Walker single. Shuyo Chang then sacrificed both runners one base, and Matthew Ellis' RBI ground out scored Andriese making it 4-1.
The next inning, Oregon got that run back as Garlick hit a solo home run to left field. Jordan Kron replaced Smigelski to start the seventh, but allowed a two-out double to Baumgartner that scored Aaron Payne for the 6-1 lead.
Joie Dunyon came on to pitch for UC Riverside in the eighth, but gave up a lead-off single to Garlick. Nick Catalano replaced Garlick on the basepaths, reached second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third following a fly out. He then came home following an Austin Grebeck singled up the middle, putting the Ducks on top, 7-1.
In the top of the ninth, Andriese homered with two outs to cut the margin to 7-2. Walker followed with a double to extend the inning, but pinch-hitter Alex Rubanowitz could not keep the rally going as the Ducks claimed the victory.
Smigelski was handed the loss, moving to 4-4 on the year, while Thorpe earned the win to improve to 5-3.
The Highlanders and Ducks continue their series with game two on Saturday, April 12 at 2 pm PT in Eugene.
